Heel pain sends more people to a podiatrist than almost any other foot complaint, and two conditions get blamed for it more than anything

Ask almost anyone with arthritis in South Florida whether humidity affects their joints, and most will say yes without hesitating. It turns out they’re not imagining it. Researchers have actually studied this question, and the honest answer sits somewhere between “it’s all in your head” and “humidity is destroying your joints.”
The real research shows a modest but real link between humidity and arthritis pain, not a dramatic one, and it comes with an important catch. Almost none of that research was done anywhere near a climate like ours. Here’s what the science actually says, and what you can do about it if your joints act up on sticky, humid days.
Our rheumatology team hears this question constantly from patients across South Florida, and it deserves a real answer rather than a shrug.
The largest study on this question tracked more than 2,600 participants across the United Kingdom using a smartphone app that logged pain alongside local weather data. It found a statistically significant, but modest, link between higher humidity and increased odds of a pain flare, more so than any other weather factor measured.
On the worst combination of weather conditions, the odds of a pain flare rose by about 20 percent compared to an average day. That’s a real effect, not nothing, but it’s also far from a guarantee that a humid forecast means a bad day for your rheumatoid arthritis or any other joint condition.
Worth noting too, that study’s headline number of over 13,000 app downloads referred to everyone who tried the app, not the group whose data actually drove the results. The core statistical findings came from a smaller, still substantial group of roughly 2,600 participants who logged pain consistently enough to be included in the final analysis.
That same large study measured several weather factors side by side, and humidity came out as the strongest one associated with pain, followed by lower air pressure and higher wind speed. Temperature on its own didn’t show a meaningful connection, which surprises a lot of people who assume cold weather is the main trigger.
Smaller studies from Europe found something similar. Higher humidity linked to more pain and stiffness in osteoarthritis patients, especially when paired with colder temperatures. None of these studies, though, were conducted in a hot and humid climate like South Florida’s, which matters more than it might seem.
A separate study across six European countries followed more than 800 people with hip, knee, or hand osteoarthritis and found something worth noting. It wasn’t necessarily the day to day changes in weather that mattered most. Higher humidity overall was linked to more pain and stiffness, particularly when the weather also turned colder, suggesting the two factors may compound each other rather than acting alone.
Seasonal patterns add another layer. One study following rheumatoid arthritis patients through a full year found that winter humidity was linked to more tender joints, while summer rainfall worsened tenderness even though lower pressure and cooler temperatures during those same summer spells were tied to less pain intensity. Spring showed no clear relationship at all. That inconsistency across seasons is a good reminder that this isn’t a simple, single dial turning your pain up or down.
Nearly every major weather and arthritis study comes from the United Kingdom or continental Europe, places with cold, damp winters and mild summers. The researchers behind the largest of these studies said plainly that their findings from the UK can’t necessarily be applied to a different climate.
South Florida is hot and humid together, which is a combination the existing research simply hasn’t tested directly. Some evidence suggests heat itself might partially offset humidity’s effect on joints rather than making it worse, though that idea comes from a less rigorously sourced review and shouldn’t be treated as settled.
No, and this matters. About three out of four people with arthritis believe weather affects their pain, and the smartphone study specifically found this belief to be validated by the data, even after accounting for mood and activity level. Your joints reacting to a humid day isn’t a psychological trick.
That said, mood turned out to be a far stronger predictor of pain than any weather variable in that same study, four times stronger than the humidity effect. Weather plays a real but modest role in a much bigger picture that includes sleep, stress, activity, and how well your underlying condition is being managed.
The belief that weather affects joint pain isn’t a modern idea either. Physicians have written about it since Hippocrates in ancient Greece, roughly 2,400 years ago, long before anyone had the tools to measure barometric pressure or humidity precisely. That kind of staying power across centuries and cultures doesn’t prove a mechanism on its own, but it does strongly suggest patients have been noticing something real and consistent for a very long time, well before modern science had the tools to explain it.
Nobody has proven exactly why weather affects joint pain, and it’s worth being upfront about that rather than pretending otherwise. A few theories exist, none of them confirmed. One suggests that changes in barometric pressure alter the pressure inside joint tissue itself, based mostly on older cadaver studies rather than research in living patients.
Another theory points to synovial fluid, the fluid that lubricates your joints, potentially thickening or thinning with temperature and moisture changes. A third suggests that humid, overcast stretches affect mood and activity levels, which indirectly shapes how pain gets perceived and reported. Even the researchers who study this most closely admit they don’t fully understand the biological mechanism.
Not necessarily. Most of the weather research focuses on osteoarthritis, the wear and tear type, and to a lesser extent rheumatoid arthritis. Interestingly, a few studies found the opposite pattern for gout. Warmer temperatures were linked to a higher risk of gout attacks, roughly 40 percent higher in one study, the reverse of what you’d expect if heat were universally protective.
That inconsistency across conditions is part of why broad statements like “humidity is bad for arthritis” oversimplify things. If you manage gout specifically, your weather triggers may look different from a neighbor managing osteoarthritis in their knees, even though you’re both dealing with joint pain in the same climate.
Lupus adds yet another wrinkle. Heat and sun exposure, rather than humidity itself, tend to be the bigger concern for lupus patients, since sunlight can trigger flares in people who are photosensitive. That’s a completely different mechanism from anything discussed in the humidity and osteoarthritis research, which is one more reason a one size fits all weather rule doesn’t hold up across the full range of rheumatologic conditions.
Patients most commonly report weather sensitivity in weight bearing joints and joints close to the skin surface, knees, hips, hands, and fingers among them. Our knee pain patients are some of the most likely to bring up humidity and pressure changes during appointments, though the pattern varies quite a bit from person to person.
There isn’t a reliable way to predict in advance which joints in your body will be weather sensitive and which won’t. Keeping a simple log of your pain alongside the day’s weather for a few weeks is often more useful than any general rule, since your own pattern may not match what the research describes for the average patient.
If you notice your joints reacting on humid days, a few practical steps can help take the edge off. Staying active matters more than it might seem, since inactivity tends to make stiffness worse regardless of what the weather is doing. Indoor, climate controlled exercise, a gym, a pool, or even a mall walk, keeps you moving without the added humidity load.
Staying well hydrated helps too, since dehydration on its own can worsen joint discomfort. Heat or cold therapy on particularly stiff days, whichever your body responds to better, along with sticking to your regular medication schedule rather than skipping doses on days you feel fine, rounds out a reasonable day to day approach.
Some patients keep a simple pain and weather log for a month or two, noting daily humidity alongside how their joints feel. It’s a low effort way to see whether your own pattern actually lines up with the general research, since individual sensitivity varies more than any broad study can capture. If a clear pattern shows up, that information is genuinely useful to bring to your next appointment.
Breathable, moisture wicking clothing can make a real difference on especially sticky South Florida days, and running a dehumidifier indoors gives your joints a break from the ambient humidity even when you can’t control what’s happening outside. Small environmental tweaks add up over the course of a humid season.
Timing outdoor activity for cooler, less humid parts of the day, early morning tends to work well here, is a simple adjustment that doesn’t require giving up the things you enjoy outdoors. None of these steps will eliminate weather sensitivity entirely, but they can meaningfully soften how much it affects your day.
Noticing a pattern between humid days and worse pain doesn’t mean your underlying arthritis is getting worse overall, and it doesn’t mean there’s nothing more to be done beyond watching the forecast. Weather is one modest factor layered on top of whatever is actually driving your joint condition.
It’s also not a reason to assume moving to a drier climate would solve the problem. The research on ideal climates focuses mainly on warm, dry regions, and there’s no strong evidence that relocating meaningfully improves arthritis outcomes for most patients, especially compared to properly managing the condition itself.
Patients sometimes ask whether they should just accept living with more pain during South Florida’s humid stretches since moving away isn’t realistic. That’s not the right takeaway either. Weather sensitivity, when it’s real, is a signal worth tracking and mentioning at your appointments, not a condition to simply tolerate in silence for months at a time.
If your joint pain feels significantly worse on humid days, but it’s also present most days regardless of weather, that pattern deserves a closer look rather than being chalked up to the climate. Persistent swelling, morning stiffness lasting more than 30 minutes, or pain that’s steadily worsening over weeks are signs worth bringing to a specialist.
